Professional Athletes from the Military Academies

The United States military academies are not a pipeline to the ranks of professional sports these days, but there was a time when they produced some of the greatest players in the country. West Point gave us Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard, who played in the same backfield for Army in the 1940’s with each player winning the Heisman Trophy. Davis was a second-round pick of the NFL and went on to a solid career with the Los Angeles Rams. Injuries prevented Blanchard from ever playing a down in the NFL. Joe Bellino, like Davis and Blanchard, was an immensely talented running back who captured the Heisman Trophy award in 1960 on his way to becoming a Navy legend. He played in the AFL for the Boston Patriots. Roger Staubach was another standout from Navy who also won the Heisman Trophy award playing quarterback for the Midshipmen. After serving four years of his military commitment which included a deployment in Vietnam, Staubach launched his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys. Nicknamed “Captain America” and “Roger the dodger” for his knack of evading tacklers, Staubach led the Cowboys to a pair of Super Bowl titles and gained entry to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. David Robinson stands as the best basketball player the military academies have ever produced. He was an All-American for Navy, re-writing the record books before authoring a Hall of Fame career in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs.
