The UConn women’s basketball dynasty made a wonderful gesture by making Shamoya McKenzie an honorary member of the team. McKenzie, a 13-year-old basketball star from Mount Vernon, New York, was killed by a stray bullet while sitting in a car on New Year’s Eve. McKenzie made it her goal to play for UConn and major in business. Her life and dreams were cut short tragically, but coach Geno Auriemma made sure McKenzie would always be part of his program at UConn. The legendary coach sent McKenzie’s family a package that included a UConn jersey with McKenzie’s favorite number (30) on it. He included a letter that said, “Once a Husky, Always a Husky.” The city of Mount Vernon held a ceremony Sunday to honor McKenzie.
